A Finish! A Long Overdue Finish!

My name is Sheila. I quilt. I am 31 years old. My husband makes fun of me constantly about my hobby. “Going to hang out with your 80 year old friends again?” (The average age in our guild is probably 40.) “Does your back hurt from all that sewing?” (No! I get adjusted very regularly and have an incredibly healthy spine, thanks.) “Hey Grandma, nice quilt!” (Thanks Grandpa?). He also has made no secret of the fact that I have not made a quilt for him yet. So this year I decided to make my husband a birthday quilt. I tied it in with the Saskatoon Modern Quilt Guild’s July Challenge – Make a Modern Border. I like crossing 2 items off my list with one project. Who doesn’t?

So I started making HST’s.IMG_8076-0.JPG

Then I pieced them together into this!

I love me some (not-so) straight line quilting!

And a look at the back.

Happy 30th Birthday Boris! A birthday quilt, 30-some days late in honour of your new decade of life ❤️

Works in Progress and My To Do List

Wow! Wednesday already?! Another productive week in the books. To start off ~ I (mostly) finished my sewing room makeover on the weekend! You can see the start of the transformation here.

And this is how it looks now!

That’s still the mess corner that is home to all of my UFO’s and WIP’s. Plugging away at that pile…. especially now with a clean and crisp sewing studio to be creative in! I also have a big blank wall that I’d really like to see covered in mini’s made by my Quilty friends… Hint hint!!

And to continue with this list:
1. Canadians Quilt Bee Block – I haven’t seen the post for July’s block yet, so this will have to wait.
2. Do.Good Stitches Block – ditto.
3. Friendship Swoon Blocks – Jaclyn is away this week, and for another 2 weeks in August. I should really move this down to the September list…
4. SMQG June Challenge – MQG challenge quilt with Petal Pinwheels – DONE!!! And I am so happy with it!!!! However…. It has been raining for the past month so I don’t have good pictures of it yet. Stay tuned!
5. SMQG July Challenge – make a modern border. I have combined this with my husband’s birthday quilt and pieced most of the top (minus the modern border) at our SMQG sew in this past weekend. Good thing it was raining all weekend so I didn’t feel one ounce of guilt holes up in the basement of the LQS with my guild members.

This is what I have so far! I’m pretty happy with it ~ hope B will be too!
6. Schnitzel and Boo Mini Swap – Done! Will be packaged and mailed tomorrow!

12. Lily’s bedroom quilt – sadly no progress.
13. Bunting for Lily’s bedroom – no progress.
14.Sew Together Bag – I have the fabric! I am planning on using my brand new bundle of Arizona fabrics for this bag! I can’t wait until this is my next project!

And for project to look forward to, this is my Autumn’s goal list:
15. Scrappy baskets for sorting my scraps.
16. Mod Improv Quilt from May 2014
17. Megan’s Mom’s Quilt
18. Sewing Circle Tote
19. Modern Blocks QAL
20. Christmas table topper
21. Mariner’s Star
22. Lucky Stars Blocks
23. Simply Solids Quilt from December 2013

In other news…. I AM REGISTERED FOR QUILT CON 2015!!!!!! I am in lots of great workshops and lectures, and wait listed for a few. Got my hotel, got my flight. Now I just need a bag….

24. Weekender bag….

WIP – a new BIG project…

So all WIP’s are at almost the exact same progress point as last week, but I do have a new project. I decided to paint and reorganize my sewing room. Slightly insane, I know. Especially considering that I didn’t have any space to move the stuff to… So on Sunday, I started by moving everything away from one wall and painting that…3 times! Evidently blue is hard to cover with white. Even with self priming paint. Once that was dry, I moved everything away from the next wall and continued. To date I have 3 walls painted! In between coats on the walls, I had a little spray can fun with a special organizing project – finally got myself a peg board! My only regret is that I didn’t buy the bigger size. Oh well, next makeover! I’m hoping to have this room put back together by the end of the weekend. We shall see! 20140618-233246.jpg20140618-233313.jpg20140618-233345.jpg20140618-233501.jpg20140618-233538.jpg<img src="https://stitchedbysheila.files.wordpress.com/2014/06/20140618-233526.jpg" alt="20140618-233526.jpg" class="alignnone

Despite the chaos that my studio is in, I did manage to do some sewing today! My daughter fell asleep in her car seat and I just so happened to have my mini for the Schnitzel and Boo Mini Quilt Swap with me. So I worked on the binding while it poured rain, and listened to great throw back hits from the 80’s and 90’s. Bliss!

WIP Wednesday ~ I’ve been productive!

I really really really love crossing things off lists. It’s a weird trait that I’m sure no other type A, working, mother has…. Last week I started organizing and prioritizing my UFO’s and WIP’s. This week I re-prioritized a few and get to cross some off the list!

Summer
1. Canadians Quilt Bee Block June – Lisa in Port Hope asked us to make this block. She had sent us the Center square and asked us to pair it with summer colours. Here’s my rendition:

20140611-220804.jpg

2. do.Good Stitched Block June – I get to cross this one off the list this month because we are taking the month of June off. A completed task is a completed task!

3. Friendship Swoon Blocks – Jaclyn and I have yet to start this.

4. SMQG June Challenge – MQG challenge quilt with Michael Miller’s Petal Pinwheels – I’m on the last edge of bingding!!! I MAY have a quilting issue in the middle though that I MAY be going in to fix….

5. Bunting for my niece’s baby shower Done! Love it!

20140611-221417.jpg

20140611-221440.jpg

20140611-221457.jpg

6. Schnitzel and Boo Mini Swap – the wheels are turning….

7. Carey’s neice’s quilt – I’m binding! I’ll blog this one as a finish soon – promise!

8. Baby Gifts for 2 *surprises* – waiting for inspiration to strike….

9. SMQG July Challenge – Modern Borders – see number 10.

10. Boris’s birthday quilt – I have fabric pulled; I decided to go with the blues and browns.

20140611-221902.jpg
I need to decide on a direction for this quilt, and it will likely have a modern border so I can use it as the SMQG July challenge. 2 tasks complete, 1 quilt. You can’t really blame me!

11. do. Good Stitches quilt from March – no progress.

12. Sewing Tote for Quilt Con – we may have chosen a pattern! But I’m going to save this for a reveal in a few months!!! Eeeekk!!! Ya…. nerdy excitement level…

13. Lily’s bedroom quilt – sadly, no progress.

14. Bunting for Lily’s bedroom – ditto.

15. Sew Together Bag – no progress.

WIP Wednesday

I always seem to have an extremely long list of unfinished projects, and an even longer list of projects that I want to do… So I’ve decided to get organizing and start holding myself accountable for finishing tasks and crossing things off of my list. I am dedicating this post to getting my projects list prioritized and organized. Here is my list:

1. Canadians Quilt Bee Block – I have yet to even look at the block request for June.

2. do.Good Stitches Block – I have yet to even look at the block request for June…. I’m sensing a pattern here!

3. Friendship swoon blocks – Jaclyn and I are going to do these blocks for each other… Then we don’t have to stick to a rigid timeline. This may in fact take us a few years! We have however, decided on a colour scheme, courtesy of our favourite coffee place Starbucks.

20140603-235536.jpg
Working with those brights and a contrasting black/charcoal background should result in pretty dramatic friendship quilts! Now to choose a month to start…

4. SMQG June Challenge – MQG challenge quilt with Petal Pinwheels – I have been sinking hours into this quilt and I love it!!! I’ll do a full reveal once it is finished. I’m currently doing the binding. For now, more peeks of the quilting.

20140603-235859.jpg

20140603-235915.jpg

5. Bunting for my Niece’s baby shower – should be a quick finish once I sit down at my machine to do it. I’ve already cut all of my fabric.

20140604-000052.jpg

6. Schnitzel and Boo Mini Swap – I’m actively stalking my secret partner!

7. Carey’s Niece’s quilt – Carey is a massage therapist at my clinic and she asked me to make a quilt for her new niece. We went and picked out some great fabric last week and I’m hoping to get started on this one at the SMQG Sew Days in 2 weeks.

20140604-000722.jpg

8. Megan’s mom’s quilt – my good friend started a quilt for her mom last year and has been unable to work on it due to all day sicknesses from the sweet little baby she’s growing in her belly ❤️ I offered to finish it by October for her mom’s birthday.

9. SMQG July Challenge – Modern Borders – must think of an idea…

10. Boris’s birthday quilt – my husband has not let me forget that I have not made him a quilt yet. His birthday in is July and I think I can knock out a sweet quilt for him to cozy up with on our deck. I would like your votes on the colour scheme though. Do we like the blues? Or the Greens?

20140604-001055.jpg

20140604-001104.jpg

11. do. Good Stitches quilt from March – just gotta do it!

20140604-001211.jpg

12. Lily’s bedroom quilt – sadly, has slid way down on the priority list 😦

20140604-001355.jpg

13. Bunting for Lily’s bedroom

20140604-001440.jpg

14. Simply Solids quilt from December 2013 – I asked for snowflake blocks. It’s hard to work with snowflakes in this summer heat!

20140604-002443.jpg

15. Mod Improv Quilt from May 2014 – just waiting for all of the blocks to filter in via Canada Post. I have 3/11 so far.

16. Sew Together Bag – I have the pattern. It’s on my list.

17. Sewing Circle Tote – I have the pattern. It’s also on my list.

18. Modern Blocks QAL – I’ve definitely missed the QAL, but I still want to make these blocks. Maybe I’ll make some Mini’s! I would like to have a display of mini’s on a wall in my sewing room.

19. Christmas table topper – I started this last year and am currently at the binding stage.

20140604-003300.jpg

20. Mariner’s Star – I think I may like to do some sort of Medallion Quilt…

21. Lucky Stars BOM – I get a new star via email every month. I have all of 2013 and 2014 is already half done! *tear* I have made one of these for Jaclyn in January because it was her month in the Canadians Quilt Bee.

Phew! That’s a long list! Hopefully I get most of this done before Next year!!

Meanwhile, I’m dreaming of Quilt Con 2015….. Mmmmmmm!

WIP Wednesday

When I first laid eyes on Petal Pinwheels I immediately fell in love. It is such a bright and whimsical line and it reminds me of springtime and blossoming gardens. Imagine my excitement when it was announced as the fabric line for the 2014 MQG fabric challenge! I was over the moon!!! Then came the tough part. What to do with it?

Seeing as how I love the fabric so much, the easy part was deciding to make something for me. Check. On my “to make” list is a deck quilt for myself. And I had the perfect quilt in mind! While visiting the quilt show in Regina, Sk earlier this month, I had purchased a quick curve ruler and the Metro Rings quilt pattern. Bingo! A match made in fabric heaven!!

20140527-233542.jpg
So I got to cutting, and sewing, and cutting curves, and more curves…. And even more curves…. I’m pretty good at cutting curves now!

20140527-233732.jpg
There we go! All ready for assembly!

20140527-233829.jpg
It turns out that piecing curves is waaaaaay easier with a quarter inch guide on. Who knew?

Eventually I got to the layout stage. I think I’ve sent Jaclyn 17 different photos of different layouts, asking for her opinion. She’s really good at humouring me! You see, I have decided not to completely stick to the pattern with this one. I have a vision for this quilt that I’ll save for the final reveal.

So for now, I’ll continue to trim these blocks…
